Known for their close partnership in doubles, which included competing together at the Paris Olympics, they now meet on opposite sides of the net with a semifinal berth on the line.

Gauff enters the tournament in top form, having recently reached her career-best ranking and capturing a significant WTA 1000 title at the China Open.

However, Pegula holds an edge in their head-to-head record, leading 4-1, including a recent 7-5, 7-6(2) victory in the Berlin semifinals this June. In 2023, they met three times, as Pegula claimed wins in the WTA Finals Semifinal (6-2, 6-1) and the Montreal Quarterfinals (6-2, 5-7, 7-5). Gauff managed her only win in the 2023 Eastbourne Quarterfinals with a solid 6-3, 6-3 performance.

Their rivalry began in 2022 at the Dubai tournament, where Pegula won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Gauff has had a strong season, highlighted by her title at the China Open and a semifinal finish at the Wuhan Open, where she was edged out by Aryna Sabalenka. Although her US Open run ended in the fourth round against Emma Navarro, she’s put together a solid year with title wins and deep runs at major tournaments.

Pegula, meanwhile, achieved a personal milestone with her first Grand Slam final at the US Open this year, where she was bested by Sabalenka in a closely contested match. Her recent tournament in Wuhan saw her reach the third round before falling to Wang Xinyu after an earlier win against Anastasia Potapova.
