Chesney’s connection with Swift dates back to 2007 when she was set to join his Flip-Flop Summer Tour as a 17-year-old opening act. However, due to a sponsorship conflict with a beer company, Swift was removed from the tour lineup, leaving her devastated. In a gesture of support, Chesney gave Swift a heartfelt note and a check to compensate for the lost opportunity. This act of kindness provided Swift with the financial support she needed to continue pursuing her musical dreams, allowing her to pay her band bonuses and cover tour expenses.

Swift, now 34, recounted this pivotal moment in a recent Time cover story, expressing her gratitude for Chesney’s support during a critical time in her career. She described how the unexpected generosity fueled her ambition and helped her build the foundation for her future success.

Reflecting on this, Chesney expressed his admiration for Swift’s journey. “To see what she did with that and the person she is now, the artist she is now, and the creator that she is now – it is unbelievable what she has become,” he said. He emphasized Swift’s creative soul and songwriting talent, noting that these qualities were evident from the beginning. “Everything you see, the stadium shows and big performances, are great. But she is still, I believe, at heart, a songwriter. That is something no one can deny.”

Chesney also recounted his initial reaction to Swift’s talent, recalling a conversation with his promoter where he predicted her future success. “I saw that early, but I didn’t know it would turn into this. When she couldn’t do our tour and then she surprised me at a couple of shows and came onstage to sing with me, I saw that look in her eyes that you can’t teach,” he said. He added that although he recognized her potential, he could never have foreseen the extent of her global influence.

Over the years, Chesney and Swift have shared the stage on several occasions, including during Swift’s 2011 Speak Now Tour and Chesney’s 2015 The Big Revival Tour. Despite not having an official collaboration, their performances together have always been well-received by fans, showcasing their mutual respect and camaraderie.
