“I’m surprised Iga Swiatek has not made that adjustment, but she is young” – John McEnroe on Pole’s ‘unwillingness’ to adapt to faster surfaces
John McEnroe has suggested that reigning WTA World No. 1 Iga Swiatek does not adjust her game according to the demands of faster surfaces. Four of Swiatek’s five Grand Slam titles have come on the slow clay of Roland Garros, with her 2022 US Open title triumph being the only exception.
The 2024 season has been a successful one so far for Iga Swiatek. The Pole won the French Open for the third straight year, clinched the bronze medal in women’s singles at the Paris Olympics, and also added four WTA 1000 titles to her collection. However, at Majors apart from the French Open, her respective campaigns have ended in disappointment. At the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, the World No. 1 was surprisingly ousted by Czech teenager Linda Noskova in the third round. Swiatek’s Wimbledon Championships campaign came to an end in the third round as well. This time around, it was Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva who dashed the Pole’s hopes.
